The Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt was founded in 1914 and got its name in 1932. An interesting fact is that the first post-war Rector, Walter Hallstein, became the first President of the European Commission in 1958, which is in line with the fact that Frankfurt is a financial and transport center of Europe and the European Union. The University has over 47,000 students, out of which 7,400 are foreign students. The University also attends over 6,000 third cycle students (PhD). The Goethe University has over 600 full professors from over 50 different countries, 2,900 academic staff and 2,100 administrative staff. The Goethe University's annual budget amounts to 640 million €. 18 Nobel Prize winners worked or still works at the University since it was founded.
