In accordance with the conclusions of the First Western Balkans Rectors’ Forum, held at the University of Novi Sad on 24 and 25 September 2018, signatories of the Declaration at the meeting held in Zagreb started foundation of Association of South East European and Western Balkans Universities.

Among other things, on the basis of the signed declaration, the community will continue to develop a Regional Platform for Cooperation in the Field of Science, Higher Education and Research, and special attention will be directed towards improving the quality of higher education in South East Europe and the Western Balkans. Also, the community will create conditions for joint capacity building in the field of science, higher education and transfer of knowledge, actively advocate common interests in the field of its activities in European Union institutions, encourage the mobility of professors, associates, scientists, researchers and students and actively advocate that South Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans allocate more funds for science funding, which should not be less than 1% of gross national income.

Starting from the premise that a large number of highly educated people migrate from this area to more developed European countries and that there is a common interest in halting or shrinking this trend, the association will especially advocate for the European Union to allocate more resources for the development of science and higher education to Universities in its composition.
